The Cityco Business Crime Package

The Cityco Business Crime Package offers city centre businesses access to a range of training and resources to help reduce crime and its associated costs.

The package has recently been improved through the introduction of the National Business Information System (NBIS), which encourages data sharing to reduce crime through an intelligence-led approach and frees up Police and security staff time. The NBIS provides businesses with a Storenet/Nitenet radio and access to a professionally managed business crime radio network. With access to the National Database of business crime offenders (in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998), the system is able to target the most prolific offenders by using ASBOs, providing businesses with accurate intelligence and up-to-date images of all offenders subject to ASBOs.

The Business Crime Package also offers:

Staff training and development
Training for staff includes credit card fraud awareness, conflict resolution, counterfeit currency awareness, radio use and civil recovery and intelligence gathering.

Improved radio communication
The package provides improved radio communication systems and promotes take-up and use of the systems, thereby improving the communications network for a broader range of businesses.

Child safe schemes
We are working towards making Manchester city centre a more child- and family-friendly environment. The Child Safe Zone helps to reinforce the safety of all customers within the city centre and can help set parents’ and carers’ minds at rest.

Civil recovery
Civil recovery is based on the principle that stealing property in the form of merchandise, company assets or money from a store is a civil wrong as well as a crime. Retail civil recovery is a method used by businesses to recover losses, damages and expenses directly from shop thieves.

Shopwatch Scheme
Through the Shopwatch Scheme retail staff volunteer to become special constables and patrol the retail environment in and around their workplace to deter and reduce crime. The scheme delivers cost savings to retailers through a reduction in crime and additional skills training for staff.
