Crime & Disorder

Manchester has pioneered a wide variety of security schemes as part of its strategy to reduce crime and the fear of crime in the city centre; and Cityco have been integral in instigating and setting up many of these, working closely with the Police, Manchester City Council, city businesses and residents.

Cityco were instrumental in setting up the Street Crime Warden scheme, which has been successful in deterring criminal activity as well as reducing the fear of crime through a visible presence on the streets. Cityco also set up the highly successful City Centre Rangers programme, which provides on-street information and advice to city centre visitors on a range of topics.

In association with Greater Manchester Police, Cityco are currently establishing city centre Safer Neighbourhoods, with teams across the city – made up of Police Officers, Police Community Support Officers, Street Crime Wardens, City Centre Rangers and other key personnel, who will be dedicated to tackling crime and anti social behaviour.

The recent ‘Operation Santa’ was a joint venture involving the Police and partners to deal with the increase in the number of people visiting the city centre at Christmas time and the associated problems it generates. As well as providing reassurance through high visibility policing, Operation Santa raised awareness of the need for vigilance by providing crime prevention advice.

Manchester city centre has an extensive CCTV network that links in with the Nitenet and Storenet two-way radio systems and car number plate recognition software to help police the city centre, prevent crime and provide evidence when crimes have been committed. Cityco helped to set up 12 emergency help points across the city that allow users to make audio and visual contact with a CCTV operator for advice and assistance.

Cityco also support retailers and other city centre businesses in reducing crime through the Cityco Business Crime Package – for more information, please see the Cityco Business Crime Package pages on this website.
