Maintaining an attractive, green and clean city centre is important for trade and prosperity and Cityco work with businesses, residents and public and private sector partners to improve the city environment. This includes schemes to keep the city streets and waterways clean; tree planting; energy and resource conservation; and programmes to improve lighting, signage and street furniture. Cityco also offer a troubleshooting service to members, which provides a speedy resolution to problems such as graffiti, litter, weeds and anti social activity.

Cityco’s work has included:

Festive lighting: Cityco manage the festive lighting scheme, securing large scale investment from the public and private sectors to create one of the biggest and most spectacular lighting displays in the UK, using LED technology to reduce energy consumption.

Waterways initiative: working with various partners, Cityco are improving the cleanliness and safety of the city’s canal infrastructure and integrating the waterways more closely into the city centre.

Cigarette litter campaign: Cityco recently teamed up with Manchester City Council and the Manchester Evening News to raise awareness of cigarette litter and hand out thousands of portable ashtrays to city centre smokers.

European funding bid: Cityco are working with partners to bid for European Regional Development Fund monies from the ‘Sense of Place’ fund, to develop the distinctive identities of certain areas of the city to increase their appeal to business and leisure users.

Britain in Bloom competition: Cityco project manage Manchester’s city centre ‘In Bloom’ entry and the city has won awards in the Best Environmental Quality and Urban Regeneration categories. The company have also teamed up with Manchester City Council to help one city centre park achieve prestigious Green Flag status.

Public lavatories: Cityco were instrumental in arranging the installation of the public conveniences that are installed each weekend around Piccadilly. The temporary portable urinals were installed in response to concerns raised by businesses and residents about the lack of facilities.
