CityCo is working with Chinatown businesses on a number of projects to improve the area – including a co-ordinated waste management programme, a new architectural lighting scheme and the recent repainting of the Chinese Pagoda.
The wooden structure, which provides sheltered seating for the community, has been given a new coat of paint funded jointly by Manchester City Council and CityCo. The work was carried out by offenders completing Community Payback and supervised by Greater Manchester Probation Trust.
In addition to the pagoda, 15 benches and the oriental-style fencing around the adjacent car park have been painted and some of the fence panels replaced. The undergrowth has been cleared; weeds removed and oriental-looking plants including Japanese Maples and Fan Palms have replaced old shrubbery. Residents from Chinatown took part in a planting day to complete the works.
Manchester’s Chinatown is the second largest in the UK after London and the third largest in Europe.
