Thousands of people headed to Manchester’s Northern Quarter last Friday to mark the royal wedding with a 1940s-style street party, supported by CityCo.

Edge Street and Thomas Street were closed all day to facilitate the event, which saw the streets decorated in bunting and stalls lining the streets. Bars opened their doors early and party-goers were entertained by a retro fashion show, swing dance lessons and music from the era.

CityCo assisted in the organisation of the event to ensure it ran smoothly. Our Northern Quarter Coordinator Tommy Wolstencroft, advised organisers and facilitated resident consultation, road closures, traffic management, safety and cleanliness to guarantee the success of the event.

Organiser Carole Keating said she hoped the event could be held every year.

She said: The wedding was an excuse really. I just wanted to organise a street party. Hopefully we can make it an annual event. The 1940s were the quintessential era of the street party, and it’s great to see so many people getting involved.

CityCo will continue to support local businesses in the development and promotion of the Northern Quarter area of the city. To discuss future projects please contact Tommy Wolstencroft on 0161 838 3250.
