CityCo has expanded a successful cleaning initiative across the city centre – Street Care Teams – following a successful 12 month trial conducted in partnership with Manchester City Council.

Fourteen recruits, hired via the Future Jobs Fund, hit the streets working in teams of two around the Northern Quarter, Piccadilly Gardens, Canal Street, Chinatown, Market Street and Piccadilly Station during the trial.

The teams were tasked with low-level cleaning and maintenance tasks, including removing posters and stickers from lamp posts and other street furniture, cleaning litter bins, painting over graffiti, sweeping up cigarette butts and clearing litter.

Following the success of the initiative, Manchester City Council now operates the scheme.
